Jockey Winona Costin was dislodged from her mount behind the barriers, prior to Race 3 at Gundagai on Sunday (11th April).
She may have sustained a head knock while attempting to hold on to her reins. Winona was conscious and talking to ambulance officers and was transported to hospital for further observation. She has an injury to her jaw and has sustained a wound to her face.
(Update at 2pm on Tuesday 13th April): Winona underwent surgery to her face at Norwest Hospital last night by Dr Justine O'Hara. The surgery went well and her facial lacerations and deeper cuts were sutured. Winona has facial fractures that have to heal on their own and these will be monitored when the swelling subsides.
(8.05pm Update): Winona is being admitted to Wagga Hospital overnight and will then be transferred to Sydney tomorrow for definitive management. She has fractured some of her facial bones, her nose and Maxilla. She will need these bones repaired and her facial laceration sutured.
(4.38pm Update): Winona is at Wagga Hospital and has a nasty laceration to her nose that will need stitching in theatre. She is awaiting scans of her face to see if she has fractures of her facial bones.
