Accomplished rider Nick Heywood offers a compelling insight into Tuesday’s Moruya TAB feature, the SCB Distributors Legend of the South BM 74 (1010m) at the popular far south coast track.
Heywood, with over 600 career wins, has won twice on both leading contenders Fourth Spargo ($2.90 favourite on TAB) for local trainer Mark Gee and Master Joe ($3.80) for Goulburn’s Scott Collings.
Heywood expanded as he rides four-race winner Master Joe with 61kg while Louise Day takes over on Fourth Spargo with 58kg and three career wins.
“I was booked earlier for Master Joe off a really nice trial at Goulburn (Aug 25) behind a top horse, I Am Me, it won that Group Three at Randwick on Saturday,” Heywood explained.
“Master’s Joe’s first-up form is outstanding (3 wins from 4) and always puts himself into the race, whereas the mare is a natural speedster on the up.”
Heywood rode her for two recent Moruya wins and a placing.
Significantly, Collings had also nominated stablemate Ticklebelly but elected for Master Joe.
Fourth Spargo has drawn the coveted rails at tight and turning Moruya for the short course flyer while Master Joe the extreme outside barrier nine.
So, it’s all favours for Fourth Spargo in a class rise off two recent short course wins. Home track, inside gate and the speed to lead again.
She has the appealing record of three wins and five placings from just nine starts.
Fourth Spargo was moved on in July from the Bjorn Baker stable after starting her career with Gabrielle Ellis.
And Mark Gee goes back a lot further with her, he pre-trained the mare before she started racing with Ellis and then Baker. While she was not deemed city grade, she’s progressed admirably for Mark.
Her times have been exceptional, sub-60 seconds with 59kg and 60kg and while up in grade she’s well in with 58kg.
At present Moruya is a Good 4 in fine weather for an eight-race card.
