The famous Dog on the Tuckerbox statue, located around 10km from Gundagai Racecourse, has found some competition.

Gundagai Adelong Race Club has created a ‘new’ Tuckerbox for their big Snake Gully Cup race meeting on Friday.

“We have rebranded the former Snake Gully Flying into ‘The Tuckerbox’,” explained GARC’s President, Michael Crowe.

“It’s a handicap sprint race [1000m] worth $50,000 which we believe will give the day some real Gundagai flavour.

“The race will support the feature of the day, the $100,000 Snake Gully Cup [1400m] which offers eligibility to the $3 million Big Dance at Royal Randwick in November 2024.”

Being a Racing NSW Country Showcase program, the eight-race program will carry $395,000 in prizemoney.

Roughie Mycah Leon, after taking out Wagga’s Stan Sadleir Stakes last Friday week, is now guaranteed a place in the Snake Gully Cup field.

“Our Fashions on the Field will be huge with sponsors including DOMA Group, Flash Jack’s Boutique Hotel and Carmel Butler Millinery,” added Crowe.

“We race again on Saturday with our Hair of the Dog Raceday taken from the colloquial saying the “hair of the dog that bit you”.

“This day is fast becoming a classic of country racing and is a great follow up to Friday’s Snake Gully Cup and we’ll have the big screen in action along with a courtesy bus to and from the racecourse on both days.”

The Snake Gully Cup Carnival kicks off on Thursday with the Snake Gully Ambrose Golf Day at Gundagai Services Golf Club followed by the annual Calcutta that evening hosted by Sky Racing's Graeme White.

Meanwhile, next Sunday is Stacks Law Firm Taree Gold Cup Day with the $100,000 feature carrying eligibility to the $3 million Big Dance at Royal Randwick in November 2024.

“The Club greatly appreciates the continued support of the Stack family who are involved again with the Cup this year,” said Manning Valley Race Club’s CEO, Damien Toose.

“We are looking forward to this year’s Cup program with over $350,000 in total prizemoney on the day.

“And we’re lucky to be holding one of the new Super Maiden races that runs for $50,000 prizemoney which will no doubt attract a strong field.

“Every other race on the day has a minimum of $30,000 in prizemoney being a Racing NSW Country Showcase program.

“Off the track we have a two-course luncheon package for $65, a full bar and bistro, an outside food van, TAB and bookmaker facilities plus our Fashions on the Field.

“It will be a great day all-round, so we suggest that people get in touch with the Club and see what is available.”

Wellington Race Club also race on Sunday with a family day offering free entry, live music, bar and food available along with a coffee van, a TAB and bookmakers for a seven-race TAB program.
