Gundagai Winners - Tips For Sunday 16th April

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Sunday’s Gundagai Cup meeting. Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 - 12:41PM RAY SILBURN CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1800 METRES)

3. Tyrol finally broke through at start 18 with quite a dominant maiden win at Moruya last week. He’s found form of late and is he can hold it this is a good chance for him to be in the finish.

Dangers: 10. Fifi Blue was well supported and just got the job done to win at Benalla over 2046m third-up. Lightly raced and drawn well so stays under notice. 9. Dodgeball was going well before a mishap last start at Wagga. No surprise if he shows up.

How to play it: Tyrol WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds) Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 2 - 1:21PM MARGARET KEENAN MEMORIAL 3YO MAIDEN (1000 METRES)

2. Could Be Maybe was far from disgraced on debut in running fifth at Albury. Settled well back off a wide gate and found the line strongly late. Drawn favourably here and open to improvement.

Dangers: 10. Majestic Rossa is a big watch at her first run for the new stable. She trialled nicely behind Morgenstern at Mudgee recently and no surprise if she puts herself into the finish. 1. Rider Eightyeight was racing quite well prior to a failure at Goulburn when a solid favourite. Have to forgive that, previous efforts suggest a win isn’t too far away. 8. Sunshine Reggae is shaping up well with two placings from four starts. Had her chance at Wagga last time but drawn nicely here so should run well again.

How to play it: Could Be Maybe E/W ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Race 3 - 2:01PM WAGGA & DISTRICT RACING SUPPORTERS CLUB MAIDEN (1180 METRES)

1. Inveterate went down fighting when resuming with a close second at Sapphire Coast as favourite a couple of weeks ago. Fitter for that, gets 3kg claim and a draw to give him every chance to go one better.

Dangers: 5. Asgarda showed improvement at her first run since November when runner-up at Wagga over 1000m. Blinkers go on and down 2.5kg. Looks a decent threat. 7. Spirited King has had three runs at 1000m of late and been thereabouts so perhaps a little further is in his favour this time. Will get the favours from a good draw and has to be considered. 6. Angel Academy was unwanted in betting but attacked the line first-up at Wagga in what looked a handy maiden. Could appreciate the extra ground here.

How to play it: Inveterate WIN ($4.00 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 4 - 2:41PM FURPHY MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

1. Gobbo’s Mate has run six seconds in his 13 starts and was just worried out of it at Wagga third-up as favourite. Has another chance to break through here if he can find a spot on speed without too much trouble.

Dangers: 6. Hurricane Coni has done nothing wrong with placings in all three starts including one here on debut. Blinkers go off on Wagga placing last time and is right in this. 12. Kockibitoo comes through the same race as Gobbo’s Mate where she ran third after having a nice run on the fence. At peak now after two runs so no reason she can’t improve.

How to play it: Gobbo’s Mate WIN ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 5 - 3:21PM IRON JACK CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

1. Snappy Jim is ready to win after two runs back and was just run down late when runner-up at Sapphire Coast over this trip. He’ll be prominent again and should take plenty of running down this time.

Dangers: 7. Desi Girl started big odds and have a good sight when second at Wagga two weeks ago. Drawn a lot better here and if she can match that effort she’ll go well. 6. Smokin’ Cod was a popular winner in a Class 1 at Albury last month and really hasn’t done anything wrong third time in. No harder here and she’s right in the finish again.

How to play it: Snappy Jim WIN ($3.10 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 6 - 4:01PM SOUNDS OF THE MOUNTAINS CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

5. Danceenuff was a smart maiden winner first-up in her own right, running handy time to win at Wagga two weeks ago. Scratchings have helped her cause and she's the one to beat.

Dangers: 3. Battle Abby might get a nice run behind the speed here and he’s not far off a second win after a close second at Sapphire Coast third-up. Each-way. 10. Giddy Up Gidleigh broke through at Wellington with a strong on pace win. Could go on with it.

How to play it: Danceenuff WIN ($2.40 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 7 - 4:37PM XXXX GOLD GUNDAGAI CUP (1800 METRES)

7. Milamoo is racing in super form with two wins from her past three starts and was dominant over the mile at Sapphire Coast. Distance holds no fears and she’ll sit back and look to sweep home. Good chance.

Dangers: 6. Tullys Gold made some ground from midfield for a close up fourth in the Albury Mile a few weeks back. Honest type who has strong claims here. 3. Scarlet Prince ran a handy race in the Albury Cup for fourth and this is much more within his reach. Fourth run back now and should have every hope. 8. Elveena won the Towong Cup before battling in a Benchmark 64 at Sandown a month ago. Inclined to give another chance.

How to play it: Milamoo WIN ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Milamoo wins at Sapphire Coast on March 31

Race 8 - 5:12PM JIM, TESS & JAMIE IRVING MEMORIAL BM66 HANDICAP (1180 METRES)

1. Zelago is in good form at present and forgive his Gosford run but go on solid win at Canberra a month ago. He draws well and while top weight he’ll run his usual honest race and put himself in the finish somewhere.

Dangers: 3. Smiler Marshall started $11 and was an all the way winner at Albury over a similar trip. Imagine he’ll look to lead again from the nice gate and could take some running down. 8. Miss Elsie May is an honest mare and while she’s only won three from 35 she’s been placed another 20 times so she can’t be left out of the chances. Performs well fresh so an each-way hope. 4. Shalook won at Wagga and Albury before stepping up in class in the Canberra Guineas so forgive that run. Has won here and can’t be left out.

How to play it: Zelago WIN ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: ODDS.
