Comeback apprentice Reece Jones has been airborne, compelling punters to stay aboard for the ride with a full book at his home track Scone TAB meeting on Friday, following his high demand throughout the Grafton Carnival.
In a career-defining season after serious injuries cost him two-year’s absence, Reece with 94 wins, including a phenomenal four-timer at Royal Randwick last month, is a dominant leader in the NSW apprentices' premiership.
Indentured to accomplished regional trainer Rod Northam, they’re on the quick back-up on Friday from Grafton where Reece rode a winner and several minors.
They combine in four of the eight Scone races. Reece also rides live chances for Paul Perry.
Aside, Scott Singleton is the trainer follow with numbers and form throughout the program after the Scone local produced flying Remlap’s Gem as the shortest-priced favourite when second at Grafton on Thursday.
“Reece is sure having a time of it - it’s deserved, works hard he’s strong, rides light and he’s put in the travel for opportunities,” Northam offered from Grafton, assessing lightly-raced Spilt and Magic Charlee as value chances at home.
“They’d be our best, Spilt is spot on, fitter for a trial, two runs from a spell and drawn okay in his right distance range.”
Spilt contests an Earthlight@Darley Class 1, 1300m. Magic Charlee is in an earlier Ghaiyyath@Darley BM 66, 1700m.
“We’re keen from the good draw, always races well home track and all his runs have been solid since he won 1600m at Wellington.”
While Magic Charlee’s wins are spaced, he offers the consistency of three wins and seven placings and 1700m suits as he’s won twice at a ‘mile’.
Reece will be hard to beat combining again in the sixth event on Paul Perry’s Imperial Grey, after their determined Muswellbrook maiden win in heavy conditions.
Scone at present is assessed a soft 5 in fine weather.
