Gilgandra

A big day has been planned by Gilgandra Jockey Club for the club's race meeting this Sunday (5th January).

The club will be providing kids' activities with a water slide in operation on both days.
There’s also plenty of shade and a giant screen.
Fashions on the field will be held with a range of categories and generous prizes on offer.
Full TAB facilities and bar and various food options will be available.
Cup day also will also see the running of the Gilgandra Newspaper Bob Foran Memorial Plate.
Bob Foran was a former racecaller and Gilgandra legend who passed away in June last year
The day will also feature a sprint race over 1100 metres as well as the Cooee Cup, a class 2 race over 1800 metres.
A Calcutta will be held on Friday the 4th of January at 6pm at cup sponsor, the Gilgandra Sporting Club.
Despite the ongoing drought, the club has undertaken extensive track renovations to improve race surface conditions.
Work began on the 20th September to realign the negative camber on the race track.
Previously the track had historically been top dressed nearer the running rail causing the issue.
The earthworks have seen up to 200 mm of soil removed from the inside and spread across the track.
The track curators have planted turf, irrigated and fertilised the surface and are happy with how the new surface presents, which the club feels will be a fairer and even race surface.
The aim of the work is to make sure every horse has a chance despite their racing pattern.
It’s set to be a great day of racing.
