Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

By Nick Berney

ROSEHILL GARDENS – BEST BET: Race 7 # 13 – ESPIONAGE

Keen on him, and he represents value. The lightly raced colt has been performing much better than the form guide reads this preparation, and he profiles to peak third-up. He's had excuses in both runs this campaign, on an unsuitable surface and in Group 1 company. The Waterhouse & Bott galloper's sectionals suggest he's set to improve, and both of his career peak figures have come on rain-affected surfaces and the clockwise direction. Tim Clark has options from the draw and can rate to win.

ROSEHILL GARDENS – VALUE BEST: Race 9 # 10 – DUCASSE

He can improve sharply third-up back onto a rain-affected surface and has multiple winning ratings for this event. The Michael Freedman-trained galloper resumed as a gelding this prep and went to a new level running slick time. Ducasse was then heavily backed second-up at the same track/distance he faces on Saturday but raced slightly flat. He can bounce back here, is at optimal fitness and is well placed under the conditions. Additionally, he may get the track pattern to suit and expect him to be strong late.

ROSEHILL GARDENS – SECTIONAL STAR: Race 10 # 16 – THUNDERLIPS

The Bjorn Baker stable has changed the trial pattern for Thunderlips, and he looks ready to sprint hard and fresh. His first-up run from last preparation was full of merit in a fast-time race, and he hit the line hard with the clock backing up the visuals. Punter's Intelligence recorded that he ran one of the meeting's fastest final 200m splits in 22.57, and repeating that effort will put him in the finish.

WELLINGTON SUNDAY – COUNTRY PICK: Race 3 # 5 – JOLLY GOOD FELLOW

He brings a strong ratings profile into this assignment and resumes for his new trainer Dean Mirfin. After being well-backed late in the trade, the three-year-old was solid first-up last preparation at Warwick Farm. Moreover, repeating that effort gives him a clear advantage over his rivals, and although he is drawn wide, Braith Knock can push forward from the tricky draw.
