Hawkesbury trainer Scott Singleton went into 'battle' on Anzac Day with runners at three different venues – and came up a winner.
Singleton had eight representatives at Royal Randwick, Gosford and Bathurst; his victory at the latter track with Cyclonite giving him his 28th winner for the season and equalling last season’s tally. Cyclonite ($2.40), with Englishman Travis Block aboard, bolted home from $2 favourite Lagarde in the 2YO Handicap (1100m). It was the Charge Forward youngster’s second win from eight starts.
Singleton, whose best season so far in terms of winners was 2014-15 (with 34), had four starters at Bathurst and nearly clinched a double with Block when Yorkshire Rock ($4.80) was just edged out in the Class 1/Maiden Plate (1800m). His other Bathurst runners were Triksing (3rd at $7.50) and Jaxim (5th at $5).
Singleton was represented at Randwick by $3 joint favourite Stock Up, who finished fourth in the 3YO Maiden Plate (1400m), and Cambage (12th at $31), who lost her near fore plate in the Benchmark 75 Handicap (1600m). His Gosford starters were $5.50 chance Fame Shines, a strong-finishing second, and roughie Jolen Jolen ($61), who ran eighth. Other Hawkesbury trainers Garry Frazer, Garry White, Wade Slinkard, Wayne Austin and Noel Mayfield-Smith had Anzac Day placings.
At Gosford, Mayfield-Smith and Austin had respective runners-up Sun And Heir ($8) and Whitney’s Star ($17), whilst Frazer’s Playard ($3.50) was a close third. At Bathurst, Slinkard’s Our Anniversaire ($9) ran second, and White’s Brown Thomas ($13) was third (to Singleton’s Cyclonite).
Singleton, meanwhile, will have three representatives at his home track’s 13th annual Stand-alone meeting on Saturday. He runs Poet’s Advocate (1500m Hawkesbury Gazette Benchmark 84 Handicap), Shazee Lee (1300m Group 3 Godolphin Crown), and Concessions (2100m Richmond Club Provincial Stayers Benchmark 84 Handicap).
Christian Reith will partner the Singleton trio. Shazee Lee won the Group 3 Blacktown Workers Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) at last year’s meeting.
