Cup Carnival Contenders Show Their Wares (Albury Sunday)

By Graeme White

There will be no shortage of Albury Gold Cup carnival contenders on display with several prospective candidates to contest the prelude of the City Handicap on Sunday.

The prelude will be a lead-in for some possible candidates for the $75,000 Albury City Hcp to be run over 1175 metres on Thursday, March 24.

The feature sprint race on the first day of the carnival has been won by some outstanding gallopers over many years

It’s not only the City Handicap prelude, but also the appearance of several other horses on Sunday who will add extra interest to the meeting.

Talented sprinter Platara will be aiming for four straight victories in the Benchmark 66 (1175m), while unbeaten filly Well In Sight looks well placed to add to her record in the Class 2 (1175m).

Well In Sight has won her only two starts at Albury and on her present form she will again start favourite to keep her record intact.

The three-year-old was nominated for another race on Sunday and also Moonee Valley a week ago, but trainer Mitchell Beer has elected to keep her in her own grade.

Well In Sight will be ridden on Sunday by new jockey Simon Miller who replaces Matthew Cahill due to his commitments at Mudgee the same day.

Perfectly drawn in barrier four, Well In Sight goes up slightly in weight and looks up to the task.

Meanwhile, Platara has only raced six times and continues to get the job done for trainer Mark Gee.

Platara continues to rise in grade and in the weights, but if anything he keeps getting better.

It’s another rise in grade for the four-year-old, but he again looms as the horse to beat.

Wangaratta trainer Craig Weeding will start Claptone and Encircle in the same race and also have the ever-consistent Boys Day Out running in the prelude.

The lightly raced Hardware Lane returns to racing after an Albury maiden win two starts ago and is another winning hope for Beer and Miller.
