Charman & Quinn Recognised With Tweed River Summer Carnival Medals

Two legends of the Tweed River area are set to be honoured with the inception of medals for jockeys and horses over four summer race meetings at Murwillumbah starting next week.

Tim Booth, Tweed River Jockey Club chief executive, said both Barry Charman, a former jockey and trainer in the Northern Rivers, and former long serving club chairman Bernie Quinn were well deserving of the recognition.

“The Tweed River Jockey Club are pleased to announce the inaugural Barry Charman Medal and Bernie Quinn Trophy to be contested over this years Tweed Coast Summer Racing Series commencing December 9th,’’ Booth said.

“The Barry Charman Medal will be conducted to determine the Jockey of the Series and the Bernie Quinn Trophy to determine the Horse of the Series.

“The Tweed River Jockey Club believes this is a fitting way to ensure both Barry and Bernie’s legacy is not forgotten and recognise the many decades of service both men have provided to the TRJC.”

A host of South-East Queensland and Northern NSW best trainers will descend upon the Tweed River Jockey Club over the months of December & January for the Tweed Coast Summer Racing Series aiming to claim the inaugural Bernie Quinn OAM Trophy, named after the longest serving racing chairman in Australia.

Quinn is a Life Member and until recently Chairman of the Tweed River Jockey Club. Serving 49 consecutive years, Bernie has been pivotal to the success of the Club over the past five decades as a Chairman and also an Owner and Sponsor.

The overall winner of the 'Horse Of The Series' will be determined on a point system basis across the action-packed four days of the racing series that accumulates to 28 races, with the winner announced at the completion of Day 4 of the Tweed Coast Summer Racing Series (Sunday 29th January 2023).

The point system (10 for first down to 1 for ninth or below) will be awarded on all 28 races throughout the series. For a horse to be eligible for the award, they must contest at least two races across the four days of the Series.

The inaugural Barry Charman Medal will be for the best jockey across the four days of the series.

Charman is a Life Member and dedicated staff member of the Tweed River Jockey Club for over 30 years. Barry is a former jockey and trainer in the Northern Rivers with much success at the Murwillumbah racecourse.

Throughout the years, and still to this day, Barry has been a part of the Tweed River Jockey Club team, currently as the Trackwork Supervisor. Barry’s contribution to the everyday workings of the Tweed River Jockey Club is without peer.

The point score is determined on a 3-2-1 basis* across the four days of the racing series with the winner announced at the completion of Day 4 of the Tweed Coast Summer Racing Series (Sunday 29th January 2023).

*In the event of a tie, the winner is he/she who has ridden the most winners. If the same number of winners are ridden, the Medal is then declared a tie.
