Black Caviar's Trainer Launches Albury Cup Carnival

Peter Moody, renowned around the world as the trainer of the unbeaten champion mare Black Caviar, will join local dignitaries to launch the 2018 Albury Gold Cup Carnival on Friday 9 March.

Moody will be the guest speaker at the annual ‘Business and Barrels’ luncheon, conducted by the Albury Commercial Club in conjunction with Albury Racing Club, that launches Albury’s biggest sporting and social event.

More than 200 local VIPs, carnival sponsors and business identities will attend the launch of the two-day carnival. Albury Commercial Club is the major sponsor of the 2018 Albury Gold Cup carnival that will offer more than $640,000 prizemoney.

The carnival opens on Sunday March 18 with the running of the $40,000 Albury Mile (1600m) prior to the Albury Gold Cup meeting on Friday March 23. The $180,000 Commercial Club Albury Gold Cup (2000m) heads a gala feature program that includes the $80,000 Albury Guineas (1400m) for three-year-olds, $50,000 Albury City Handicap (1175m) and $50,000 Flat Knacker Showcase Sprint (900m).

Peter Moody is regarded as one of racing’s most entertaining personalities and follows a long list of racing celebrities who have launched the Albury Cup Carnival including Lee Freedman, John Messara, Jim Cassidy, Damien Oliver, Tommy Berry and Michael Rodd.

Albury played a significant part in Black Caviar’s early career as the great mare was broken in and educated as a yearling at the Albury stables of Moody’s close friend Brett Cavanough, the former Albury trainer now based at Scone in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Albury Racing Club chief executive Michael Wighton is delighted to have Peter Moody joining Albury City Mayor Kevin Mack, Commercial Club president Graeme Edgar and Albury Racing Club chairman Mark Cronin to launch the 2018 carnival on March 9.

“Peter Moody is one of Australian racing’s most popular personalities and is renowned as a colourful and entertaining guest speaker,” Wighton said. “Given Black Caviar’s early connection to Albury and Peter’s own experiences at past Albury Cup carnivals he is the perfect fit to be our VIP guest at the carnival launch.”

Bookings for the Albury Commercial Club ‘Business and Barrels Luncheon’ are essential. Phone (02) 6025 1333 for details.
