Bellamy's Not Resting On Laurels (Port Macquarie, Sat)

By Rod Fuller

After reaching a training milestone at Grafton last week, Brett Bellamy is poised to continue his great achievements with strong chances at the Port Macquarie Breakers RLFC Easter Raceday on Saturday.

The prominent Coffs Harbour mentor was rewarded for a stellar career when Change the Date accounted for Nickelback in a busy finish last Sunday and this catapulted his career victories to 1000.

It was the highlight of a wonderful journey from an early life around Hawkesbury Race Club where his father, Kevin was able to introduce him to key industry figures who provided all the necessary background for the career ahead.

Coffs Harbour trainer Brett Bellamy

After relocating to Coffs Harbour in his late teens and a wonderful experience with Colin Hayes at Lyndsay Park, together with valuable guidance from leading trainers at Randwick and Tamworth, Bellamy’s training career was off and running.

Success came quickly with Mahlula Star providing the foundation for a lifetime of achievements to follow including numerous Country and Northern Rivers Training Awards and influence on many great jockeys including Zac Purton, who is now considered one of the great international riders.

The dynasty continues with Courtney Bellamy providing great support to her father and the popular hoop is really making a name for herself as a top class apprentice following multiple victories on the Northern Rivers and South East Queensland.

The Bellamy stable has solid chances spread throughout the program headed by Raised by Wolves in the Dudley Millard Breakers Old Boys Handicap following the gelding’s solid placing on heavy ground behind Octavio at Ballina a fortnight ago.

The son of Wolf Cry has been a model of consistency with the forecast of good racing surface and the engagement of Mikayla Weir providing further confidence as the dominant rider continues her move up the NSW Premiership.

The assignment won’t be easy as She’s Enuff provides the testing material following a Grafton win in February together with handy runs on rain-affected tracks with the appointment of Emily Farr providing an appropriate apprentice allowance.

Other chances centre around Merapi who managed the wet conditions to provide the Trent Potts and Leanne Boyd partnership with a solid track win last outing while Better Yet and Golden Breeze should also be considered.

Brett Bellamy has a strong hand in the Fastplast Building Supplies Handicap with Lil’ Bit Vaig, Brash ‘N’ Wood entered alongside Rosso Nero and it will be interesting to see whether the stable make the journey to Port or elect to save some of their runners for their home track engagements on Tuesday.

All eyes will be focused on Perhaps Perhaps in the event with the new arrival to the Marc Quinn stable benefiting from two recent barrier trials in preparation for the weekend assignment.

The Written Tycoon mare debuted at Pakenham last August before the relocation north and Liam Blanch has been assigned for the ride as the promising young apprentice continues his re-establishment to the local jockey ranks.

Uncle Moonlight looks the safest investment on the program following a Taree win last February and a solid placing at Tuncurry a fortnight ago with the flashy chestnut looking well suited on top of the ground and the Wayne Wilkes stable electing to run the dual acceptor in the Prior Management Group in preference to the second event.

Raw Gold should be rewarded for consistency in the opening race on the card while another strong chance centres around Charmed Destiny in the SWR Building Supplies Handicap after the locally trained gelding scored a recent win at his home circuit.

The club is delighted to continue a great association with Port Macquarie Breakers RLFC and welcome all their players, family and friends to what is promising to be a tremendous day of Easter racing at Port.

Races on the program are named in honour of Coastal Commercial Linings, Dudley Millard Breakers Old Boys, Prior Management Group, Fastplast Building Supplies, SWR Building Supplies and Cascade Pool and Spa Centre.

All are reminded that the festival of holiday racing action concludes at the complex with Interline Raceday on Sunday 27th April and it is great to have the local guttering and spouting business supporting Mid North Coast racing.

Details regarding general admission tickets together with reserved seating in the Ivan Livermore Stand are available by contacting the Port Macquarie Race Club office on 02 6581 1964 or email  admin@portmacquarieraceclub.com.au

President David Todd and the committee of Port Macquarie Race Club would like to wish everyone a peaceful and joyous Easter period and thank all racing participants and patrons for their continued support.
