Former Irish galloper Would Be King has moved into contention for the NSW Picnic Champion Series following his victory in last weekend's Miller and James Cootamundra Picnic Cup (1400m).
Would Be King, who was placed at The Curragh (Ire) at his first three starts, was sent out the $3 favourite and scored by just under a length for Anaelle Gangotena.
Runner-up was Common Purpose (Todd Bailey, $6) with Waiting for a Mate (Wayne Wheatley, $4) a nose away in third place.
Trainer Doug Gorrel and Anaelle Gangotena also combined to take out the final race of the afternoon, the Illabo Bulk Haulage & Horizon United Group Class 2 Trophy (1400m) with Georgian Court ($2 favourite).
Would Be King has now accumulated 14 points in the picnic series via seven points from each of his wins at Grenfell and Cootamundra.
The Connie Greg-trained Valadyium continues to lead the Series on 32 points from Gossip (30pts), Call Me Trinity (25pts) and Nepenthes (21pts).
The next round of the NSW Picnic Champion Series is the Boorowa picnics race meeting this Saturday.
