"Blessing In Disguise" - Club Gets Another Crack At Staging Armidale Cup

By Mark Brassel

Armidale Jockey Club will be hoping their fortunes turn for the better at next Sunday’s Tooheys Armidale Cup Day after the meeting was washed out in March.

“This is ‘Take 2’ of our cup that was called off earlier this year,” said AJC’s chief executive, Jim Dedes.

“However, it may be a blessing in disguise as we had been toying with the idea to change our cup meeting to December which will allow local businesspeople to host Christmas parties here on raceday.

“We’ve already had a great response without advertising. Tooheys has been a long-time supporter and sponsor of the Armidale Cup with our main sprint race sponsored by DeBortoli Wines.

“They’ve been fantastic as they have stuck with us during some tough times that have included the drought, floods and then COVID.”

Tooheys Armidale Cup Day is a Racing NSW Country Showcase Meeting offering $275,000 in prizemoney. The cup carries $60,000 and the Armidale Newmarket (1100m) is worth $35,000.

Turners of Armidale sponsor the Fashions on the Field with a $500 voucher for the Best Dressed Lady.

“Tickets are available at the gate with eight TAB races, an on-course tote and local bookmakers, full bar and catering,” Dedes said.

“Apart from Tooheys and DeBortoli wines we must thank our other sponsors Roberts & Morrow Chartered Accountants, Servies Club Armidale, Armidale Roof Tilers, Laing + Simmons Armidale Real Estate, TWM Armidale, McPhee Distribution Services, Maria River Cattle Company and Tamworth Property Company.”

There will be a Calcutta on Saturday 11 December at Servies Club from 6.30pm with special guest Dave Stanley from Sky Sports Radio.

Meanwhile, the festive season arrives early at Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club with their popular Christmas Party race meeting tomorrow.

“Our Christmas Party Raceday is always a fabulous occasion – it has a great festive feel to the day, with a number of activities and events hosted throughout the afternoon,” said TFJC’s president, Garry McQuillan.

“The event is suitable for everyone in the family from your oldest to youngest members and we want patrons to come along and join in all the fun!”

Feature race is the $34,000 Tuncurry-Forster Cup (2100m) supported by the $24,000 The Pearl (1200m) and $24,000 Tuncurry Mile (1600m). Tuncurry then presents its Seafood Raceday on Saturday 15 January.

“Our Seafood Raceday is an annual affair attended by people from far and wide. Punters can feast on a range of delicious local seafood options while watching all the races,” McQuillan said.

“This event is well-loved by our regulars, and we’d love to welcome any newcomers to join in all the fun.”

There is a free bus service to and from both raceday events, for details head to - tuncurryforsterjockeyclub.com.au
