Lining up at the start against expensive opposition, six -year-old chestnut gelding Deshawn is usually the pauper in the field.
Price range for racehorses is generally from $5,000 to hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars however Deshawn after being unplaced at the only two starts was picked up from an online sale for $800 by Barry Wall from Cowra.
Deshawn is the only horse trained by Barry Wall who is also the track curator for Cowra Jockey Club.
A very honest, tough, and consistent galloper, Deshawn at the four starts prior to Bathurst had won at Cowra and been placed at Wellington, Forbes and Cowra at distances from 1000m to 1400m.
The overall record for Deshawn is seven wins and 13 placings from 39 starts and the $800 horse has now accumulated over $100,000 prizemoney.
Ridden by Dubbo-based apprentice Jake Barrett on Monday in the 1100m Bathurst RSL Club Benchmark 58 Handicap, Deshawn ($2.50 out to $4) came from seventh approaching the home turn to wear down the heavily supported Warwick Farm-trained leader Chalkley (Robbie Brewer, $4 In to $2.40 favourite) and win by a head with Kimmy Lee (Mikayla Weir, $12) one and a half lengths away third.
“Deshawn always tries his hardest,“ said proud owner trainer Barry Wall after yet another game performance.
The first leg of a double for talented apprentice Jake Barrett was Boorowa Girl in the 1200m Bathurst Glass & Windows Maiden Handicap for Bathurst trainer Paul Theobald.
Coming from last with a big run down the outside, Boorawa Girl ($7.50 out to $11) was a two lengths winner from Bringonthebubbles (Alysha Collett, $2.70 to $1.90 fav) and Wandjina Spirit (Jean Van Overmeire, $21).
Well ridden by Grant Buckley, Wasserman ($4 to $3.70) travelled fourth on the rails then gained a split to beat Kiss ‘N’ Run (Jean Van Overmeire, $5) and Snitzyka (Alysha Collett, $3.20 fav) in the 1400m Erins Quality Outdoor Power Centre Class 1 Handicap.
Wasserman is trained at Bathurst by Gayna Williams for Debbie Kepitis a co-owner of the now retired superstar Winx.
Bathurst next races on Sunday 25th September featuring the $100,000 The Panorama (1300m) and the 1800m Bathurst Cup which is a Big Dance eligibility race.
Racing is at Gulargambone on Saturday and Mudgee (TAB) on Sunday.
