It is two years since the passing of Inverell Jockey Club president Don Bartlett, whose work for the club is recognised in the Don Bartlett Battlers Cup to be run in November.
The Cup is a $22,000 feature run as a SKY2 meeting on Saturday 24 November.
If bush trainers have missed a slot in The Kosciusko they can still have a shot at a start in the Battlers, by nominating for the remaining qualifying meetings at Barraba on 21 September, Bundarra on 5 October and finally Tabulam on 9 November.
Run as a BM 58 over 1400 metres, the Battlers Cup is restricted to horses that have competed at the one-day clubs in the northern area with meetings already staged at Deepwater, Glen Innes, Bingara, Warialda, Narrabri and Mungindi.
Any horse competing at those meetings is eligible to nominate.
Last year’s winner, Thundering Heart, came all the way from Taree after qualifying with a start in the Bundarra Cup as had the previous year’s winner Victory Lass.
For both horses, the Battlers Cup winner’s cheque was by far the biggest prize they had won in their careers around the bush tracks and smaller meetings.
The Cup will be sponsored for the first time with Tom Graham from Sapphire City Engineering continuing his assistance to the club by becoming the naming sponsor of a race dedicated to the memory of his close mate.
Nominations for BARRABA close at 11am on Monday (16th September).
