Dave Callaughan believes some divine intervention could be on the cards with his sweepstake tickets in the $2 million The Kosciuszko.
"I was moving cattle when my dad, Brian called me. I told him I couldn’t talk as I had cattle on the road and that I'd ring him back," Callaughan explained."My phone rang half an hour later - it was my sister in a distraught voice. She said dad had an accident and rolled the tractor and it has killed him."
Brian Callaghan was a trainer with 56 winners including the smart Perfect Rapture and Fuel that were both owned by his sister-in-law June Baker.
"Buying the Kosciuszko tickets all came about when I was having a beer with a few mates at our local.
"Tony Lee is one of those mates and he said 'let’s do a Kossie syndicate in the memory of your dad.
"We called it 'One For Wal', Wally being dad's nickname.
"The pub and the whole community came in on it and we had everyone’s names on the back of beer coasters.
"We raised $4500 so I rang June to tell her what we had raised, June kindly said she would match the money for the syndicate.
"By the time I went back to Yass for dad's funeral on the Wednesday, I met with June on Thursday morning and it was arranged for Sam O'Neill from TAB and Robert Packwood, the Yass RSL manager to be present to help us buy the tickets.
"We had a total of $10,000 to buy the Kossie tickets - Rob said it was the biggest transaction they'd ever had and that it would take them to one of the top 14 clubs in NSW.
"Let's hope Wal's looking down on us for The Kosciuszko sweepstakes when they're drawn!"
Time is running out to buy tickets for The Kosciuszko, winning tickets are drawn on Friday 9 September. For further information visit - thekosciuszko.com.au
