Former top-class rider Corey Brown has been appointed the new Head Jockey Coach for Racing NSW to mentor apprentice jockeys.
In a distinguished career, Brown won 2466 races including 49 Group 1 events with a further 204 Stakes wins in his 27 years in the saddle.
“Corey Brown was one of this country’s best jockeys with a very successful riding career both here and overseas,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive, Peter V’landys AM.
“We are delighted that Corey has joined Racing New South Wales to head up the coaching team and share his knowledge to improve our riders.
“His vast experience as a jockey and horseman will be invaluable to those learning their trade.”
Brown took out the 2001/02 Sydney Jockeys Premiership with 106 wins and was runner-up on four other occasions.
He also has extensive overseas experience having ridden in ten other countries, England, Ireland, France, Dubai, Singapore, Mauritius, South Africa, Macau, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
Brown, 45, began his riding career in Country NSW before transferring his indentures to Rosehill trainer and former top jockey, Neil Campton.
He won his first race at Kempsey in 1991 and eight years later scored his first Group 1 victory aboard Camino Rose in the Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens.
In the 2007/08 racing season Brown was Australia’s leading Group 1 rider bagging seven wins at the top level including five straight aboard Apache Cat.
His career was cut short after being badly injured in a race fall during the Queensland Derby three years ago this winter.
Corey Brown said today: “I am really looking forward to my new role at Racing NSW and I’m very keen to get started.
“I can’t wait to get back onto the track and in this new role after sitting on the sideline for three years; this position is perfect for my next phase in the racing industry.”
Brown will lead the coaching and mentoring team of former top jockey Rodney Quinn (Metropolitan and Provincial areas), Group One-winning trainer Pat Webster (Provincial & Country), and former successful NSW jockeys Jamie Whitney, Dale Jeffries, Brad Clark and Scott Thurlow (Country areas).
